Al-Aksa by night

.
Night in the Old City.
Al-Aksa has a dome of black lead, but illuminated at night it shines like gold.
.
To learn more about the world's second oldest mosque and to see photos of its interior, please go to Sacred Destinations. To read about al-Aksa as told by Moslems, please click here.
.
NIGHT is the August 1 theme at City Daily Photo which has grown to over a thousand bloggers.
.
P.S. To answer Leif Hagen and other readers who asked why Jerusalem Hills Daily Photo does not appear on the portal of City Daily Photo . . . Well, when I began blogging I intended to join the group but soon discovered that it was impossible to limit myself to the one-photo-per-day rule; so I assumed JHDP would not qualify for membership.
.
Would you believe?? There is a Monastery Daily Photo! Pay the blogger-monk a virtual visit and get the inside story of monastic life.
.
Yalla, shalom and blessings to all.

  1. Hi Dina, I've learnt something new again! I always thought that the dome of the mosque was made of copper or even gold.

  2. Dina - thanks for the answer! Most CDP bloggers don't limit themselves to one photo per day. In fact, sometimes I also show 2 or 3 photos in a posting. I wish you'd join CDP so more people could easily find your great blog! Kind regards from EAGAN daily photo

  4. Wil, shalom. You are thinking of the other Moslem place near al-Aksa. The Dome of the Rock shrine (it is not a mosque) does indeed have a golden dome.

    Cieldequimper, amazing, isn't it.

    Leif, really? OK, maybe ...

  7. It is beautiful...

I'm a little confused though. The Dome of the Rock isn't a mosque? Isn't that the location where Mohammed ascended into heaven? built on the ???

call this fill in the blanks

  8. Richie, I think so too. I don't get to the Old City at night very often. Everything looks so different all lit up.

Ical, I would like to visit the Temple Mount too! Haven't been up there since the 70s, when the Wakf's rules for visiting were more relaxed. Hope you can come someday.

Jedediah, thanks. I'll be happy if you visit Monastery Daily Photo.

Pasadena Adjacent, well, the Dome of the Rock is full of the huge rock, no room for people to pray. So yes , it is a shrine and not a mosque. Here's some of the interesting stuff from the Muslim link I cited:
"Ten years after the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) received his first revelation, he made a miraculous night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and to the Seven Heavens on a white flying horse called Al-Buraq El-Sharif. During his interval in Jerusalem, the Prophet stopped to pray at the rock (now covered by the golden Dome), and was given the commandment to pray five times a day.
Today, Muslims throughout the World use Mecca as the direction of prayers (Qibla). However, for 16½ months following the Prophet Mohammad's miraculous journey, Jerusalem was the Qibla."
