A pretty truck comes to Grandchamp

Monday is a "desert day" of solitude and silence for the sisters of this contemplative community where I am volunteering.
On this quiet gray morning I was surprised to hear loud noises down in the courtyard.
I leaned out my window and saw this colorful truck!

The men opened all the manhole covers and made sure all was in order.

Even next to the centuries-old fountain that flows continually.

I like how the workmen in Switzerland are always happy to smile for a photo.  :)

Spring cleaning at the firehouse

Seen in Jerusalem today.
It looks like even fire and rescue trucks need a thorough cleaning just before Passover!
Our Pesach holiday starts this Friday evening.

UPDATE: The day after I took this picture, the firemen were battling flames that engulfed two buses in Jerusalem after a terrorist's bomb exploded!

Going out in style

This elegant carved and painted wood carriage was made in Szarvas, Hungary, in the 19th century.
Would you believe, it was used for funerals!
I'd call that going out in style.

The sign next to it at the Israel Museum says this about the Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) carriage:

Accompanying the dead on their final journey towards burial is part of the tradition of honoring the deceased and is already mentioned in Rabbinic literature as one of the essential deeds "for which one is rewarded in one's lifetime and also earns a reward in the world to come."
Funeral processions were held with due ceremony and the deceased was carried in a special vehicle, such as this majestic carriage from Hungary.

The shpritz truck

As seen from the Meitar to Beer Sheva bus this morning.

This stretch of  dusty Negev desert near the road  surely hadn't felt water since our last rain which was on May 8.
The ground must have been thrilled to get this spray of water today.
I didn't have the heart to tell the earth that soon it would be covered forever with new pavement.
