Today is International Mountain Day .
This year's theme is Mountain Farming about which the FAO says, "Here we have an opportunity to raise awareness about
how mountain agriculture, which is predominantly family farming, has
been a model for sustainable development for centuries."
I like to remember my years in Switzerland, where mountains are mountains and farms are farms!
The slopes of the Jura Mountains, near the French border, are covered with vineyards.
Lots of wine-making there.
In the Alps most of the mountain farming that I saw was for hay-making.
In the brief summers, green meadows are heaven for cows, sheep and goats, and even deer.
And of course for hikers too!

Gorgeous shots Dina!
ReplyDeleteAs a rock climber I should have known this. The Rockies and the other western ranges are our proper mountains, though the Appalachians and Laurentians give pretty good climbing opportunities in this part of the continent.
ReplyDeleteJust wonderful!! That day fits me well:-)
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy to see beautiful mountain photos :-)
ReplyDeleteIs this an example of 'cloud spray'? Nice catch!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if here is a World Hill Day...
ReplyDeleteThese shots look heavenly.
ReplyDeleteLove the mountains and the sky! I have been through a little bit of the Alps on the German/Austrian border and it is beautiful and serene there.
ReplyDeleteLovely images.
ReplyDeleteFor a second I thought the landscape had changed dramatically over night! :-)
ReplyDeleteI prefer cheese and Chartreuse.
Yes, a picture of James, the elusive James. Not that you'd recognise him, I made sure of that. I don't think he'd have liked it one little bit!
Beautiful photos, Dina.
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking photos!
ReplyDeleteBoth photos are wonderful, but the sunbeams on the vineyard reminds me of summer here.
