An electrifying kiss

Suddenly crazy dazzling streaks across my laptop and TV screens, then a huge flash of light outside my window and a loud PATZ!!  And then my place and the whole neighborhood were plunged into darkness.
I grabbed a big flashlight and walked down to the corner to check the big electric pole, the one that says "HIGH VOLTAGE,  DANGER OF DEATH!"

Our town's security team was already there, calling the Electric Company's emergency repair line.
Curious neighbors were milling about and pointed out to me what had fallen from above to the hard pavement below.

One pigeon sitting on one high tension wire had touched a second pigeon sitting on a parallel wire, forming a short circuit and causing the big bang and their own electrocution!
Totally charred wings, so sad.

The poor pair of pigeons had only wanted to kiss each other good night.
Even in death they were locked together.

Oh dear what tragic outcome. Luckily though that it was "only" birds and not something worse.

The electric wires and that big transformer are the pigeons' regular roosting places so their getting roasted was bound to happen sooner or later.
I went back to the corner an hour later just as the Electric Corp. repairmen were putting their ladders back on their van. I thanked them for bringing the neighborhood's power back, even at 10:45 pm. I asked if this was a rare occurrence and they said no. I asked if there is no way to keep birds from living half of their time sitting on the wires. He said no.

The nice part of the evening: when the lights suddenly came back to life I heard a happy collective "Ohhh!" from all the houses on the block.

Sad the pigeons got electrocuted. Hope you got your electricity restored shortly after these photos were taken.

ohhhh... such a sad ending to a brief romance! . However, from a practical standpoint, it sounds like your Emergency guys were right on top of things ... and that's always reassuring to know.
