This too shall pass

Having time before the next bus back to my village, I went exploring today in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit HaKerem.
The morning after! Just yesterday all these palms were the sekhach, the roof cover of sukkahs. Now the holiday of Sukkot is over and the sukkah-booths are being dismantled.
Flowers or birds? Don't they look like colorful crested cranes?
Even stranger than the car itself was its Hebrew lettering. On the left door it says "Gam zeh ya'avor" written from right to left (as is normal in Hebrew) and on the right-hand door the same sentence but written in mirror image and going from left to right.
At home I looked at the website. Baruch Hadaya is a 16th generation Jerusalemite. Wow! He is an artist, a storyteller, a jeweler.
He says that "Gam zeh ya'avor," meaning "This too shall pass," engraved on his rings, is based on a story about King Solomon. You can see or hear the tale here.
Hadaya says, "This story reminds you that when you have a bad day, it will pass. And when you have a good day seize the moment, enjoy it, appreciate it because you should know it would not last forever."

  4. Hello beautiful Dina.

although I do love the name Raphaela. It means healer in hebrew doesn't it?

You can find philosophy in the strangest places and I guess it is all the more attractive when it is plucked from the mundane.

There is a car dealer down my street a ways that displays philosophically deep ideas on his large electrical sign and then in the next moment we here about the price of a sports car. ha ha.

  5. I forgot that all those unique sukkuh-huts don't stay up forever -- what a shame! Still I guess the families are always happy to get back to their normal routine, too.

The Bird of Paradise flowers are so majestic!

We have those little smart cars in Canada. I am always amazed that they can compete with the fast-flowing highway traffic -- but they seem to be a little too vulnerable, to me.

Lovely story about the rings. You find SO many interesting things to blog about!

  10. That' way we can read this mooto on shops windows! And what a good motto! Usually, we say thet to children to comfort them : It is going to pass.
With our experience, it can become with a little nuance : "This TOO shall pass"!
It could be mine, in fact. In my header blog: : )

  15. thankyou beautiful Dina for another beautiful sky message from Jerusalem.

You know in Hannukah how you light a candle every day well one year around christmas through the last week before christmas the sky was coloured beautiful pastel colours every evening before sunset and to meditate on this sky was like lighting a candle to celebrate the coming birth of the messiah and I remember distinctly one evening it was a creamy rose coloured and the sky has been a creamy rose colour since but no two sky lights are ever the same which is exciting spiritually and physically.

Actually this post is about the next entry.

    thanks.
    hugs.
