Sarah gets a shower

.
Early morning pre-opening Mamilla Mall life is reflected in the store window in this picture for Weekend Reflections.
.
I was shocked to see the cleaning man throw a bucket of water on one of the Bible Stories statues.
.
But our matriarch Sarah just laughed.
She seemed quite tickled when the cleaner scrubbed her with his broom.
.
The statue is "Sarah" by Rita Paran, based on Genesis 21:6:

ו וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרָה--צְחֹק, עָשָׂה לִי אֱלֹהִים: כָּל-הַשֹּׁמֵעַ, יִצְחַק-לִי. 6
And Sarah said: 'God hath made laughter for me; every one that heareth will laugh on account of me.'
[This was after God had promised the barren Sarah that she and Abraham would bear a son in their old age.]

  3. The top picture is worthy of enlarging to see all that is going on. Why are all the stones numbered? The statue is terrific - it's not often you see statues of people laughing. Nice to think she enjoyed the 'wash and brush-up'!

  4. I like how you linked the everyday and the sacred revelation from the Bible here, Dina.

It makes me share the smile (laughter) with Sarah (may God blessing be upon her).

  5. You have a humurous way of describing the event -but then Sarah laughed herself;)

  6. Thanks friends for all your comments. What fun!

Jennyfreckles, I'm so glad you asked. There are several old buildings at the new Mamilla Mall with numbered stones. Sometimes preserving a heritage building means taking it apart, stone by stone, and rebuilding it in a new setting.
This process is called shiatuk in Hebrew.
I have never been able to find an English word for it. Anyone?

  7. What a great statue! I don't think the statues mind a little drink of water and I good cleaning every once in a while. :)

  8. I love this post, Dina. The statue is wonderful, and I'm glad there's someone to keep her clean. Even in Jerusalem there must be pigeons who sit on statues, and some statues never get cleaned.
