Sitting in the light of Merav

.

A sitting corner at the Sde Boker campus of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

A local stone is embedded right in the table.
The metal sign says "In memory of Merav Ziv, our student in the Desert Ecology Department."

She died in 1999 in the field,* on a research trip, after falling from her bike.

Her family funds a Merav Ziv Graduate Student Award for Excellence in Ecology and there is an annual symposium on her name.
.
* UPDATE DEC. 2017:  Not exactly, apparently.  Please see the comment below from Avi about the date and sad real cause of Merav's death.  May her memory be for a blessing.

  3. Do students take the time to sit and think quietly? My memory of uni days is that people are always rushing about, grabbing coffees on the run.

  9. Friends, thanks for your remarks.

Hels, back in our university days there was no need to sit quietly on a bench because we had no cell phones? I sense that students at BGU in the desert and students in cold Jerusalem HUJ are a lot different.

VP, yeah, it seems strange. I could not find any more details about how Merav died. The desert can be a dangerous place.

    1. She comitted souicide on August 22 1999. I was the last person who met her during the night of December 22th. On 26.12 she fell from her bike and became disabled. For her life like that where not decent. So when she went out from the hospital she killed herself with pilles

  14. Shalom Avi, thank you very much for completing and correcting this tragic story.
It is a sad ending to a young life. At least Merav has a beautiful memorial place. May her memory be a blessing, especially to you.
