Women of the Negev

.

Two young Bedouin women crossing the highway, heading in the direction of Tel Sheva.

Tel Sheva, or in Arabic Tel as-Sabi, is a Bedouin town twice the size of Meitar, my town.

  2. The traffic signals aren't that different from ours, though the road markings are.

  6. Those black garments covering the whole body seem like they'd be so hot, but maybe not?

With the UE rules, we are changing our white road markings in yellow.

  9. Friends, thanks for all your interesting observations.

VP, this long black garment is pretty standard now for many young and slim Bedouin women. It fits in with the increasing Islamization in southern Israel in recent years.

Crystal, I know I feel the heat more when I wear even a black T shirt in the sun. But enlarge the photo and you can notice the one girl's skirt is thin enough to see her legs through it.
Some of the older Arab men wear a white head to toe garment.

  12. It is nice to see people wearing traditional clothing in a modern setting, but the driver to the right must have looked more at the ladies that at the signals.

  14. The first thing I always think is isn't it hot to be so covered up?
