Teak benches

.
I thought it strange that this Supreme Court Building employee was collecting the ashtrays from the 14 benches in the foyer. Ashtrays??

It left a strange empty hole.
Our guide explained that when the architects of the building were designing the furniture (yes, that too!) back in the 1980s, there were still no laws against smoking in public places.
.
Maybe nowadays people throw their chewing gum there instead of cigarette butts. Or whatever.
In any case, the man had a cleaning job to do.
All of the 14 benches in the niches are made of Burmese teak.
Our guide said that in 2010 that would not work. Today we are allowed to purchase only farmed (plantation) teak and not wood from original growth trees.
.
If you missed Monday's post on the benches inside the courtroom, you can look here.
.
These smooth and elegant benches are a contribution to RuneE's "Bench on Friday," where bench-lovers from around the world converge. You are invited too.

  1. Something creative like a plant to go in the holes would be good. Perhaps a teak plug in a contrasting finish. At any rate, the benches are stunning, strangely empty. I'll have to read more and find out why you were there!!!!

  4. That last photo was impressive - as was the architect's work. I hope that the number of benches do not reflect the number of cases waiting for trial...

  5. Excellent choice for the bench meme.

«Louis» likes the geometry of the arches at the top - they give a nice rhythm to your composition.

  8. I like the photos - the light is fantastic. It is indeed good that smoking now is forbidden at many places.

  9. I once went to our local Federal Court Room in show of support for a friend that had "business" there. The high ceiling, wood paneling and large room made me feel that I was in the presence of serious business. I was only a visitor and yet I felt the weight of that court on my heart.

Love your photos of the benches and the building. It is truly something I would love to experience.
