The heraldic "lion rampant" is the emblem of the Jerusalem Municipality.
You will find him everywhere, on sewer covers, trash bins . . .

Pictures of life in Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Hills. And since August 2013 also a look at the northern Negev, my new home.
Happy May Day to you.
ReplyDeletePatsy
I like the top photo, Dina. The lion reminds me of Peugeot, the car brand.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it symbolize, btw?
Lots of shalom to you too.
Patsy and Bennie, thanks. I remember the old days (late 60s, when I came) when May Day meant red flags and Socialist parades in Israeli cities.
ReplyDeleteEki, oh right, Peugeot, the lion of the road. haha
I think our lion, guarding the walls of Jerusalem, might be the "lion of Judah" from the Torah. The lion is a common Jewish symbol from antiquity.
We have very similar metal benches in my town but they're red (appropriate for May Day I suppose). In fact, ALL of the metalwork in my town is red - streetlights, benches, fencing... It's a bit overwhelming actually.
ReplyDeleteHi Dina, I love the lion - 2 lions are on each side of the coat of arms of Holland with the caption "Je Maintaindrai" - I will overcome (I think, my French is rusty).
ReplyDeletePlease do me a favor, somehow in publishing your comment about my blog on newspapers, it got "lost" (probably pushed the wrong key, LOL) and I like to read your whole comment - thanks:)
Nice observation!
ReplyDeleteYou learn something new every day if you stop here.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the last speaker: You always learn something when visiting this page! Tank you Dina!
ReplyDeleteDid you know that the national coat of arms (?) of Norway is a red and yellowcoloured shield with a standing lion?
A little late shabbat shalom!
Very clever!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that it looks so familiar to me and now I found that it looks like Peugot logo.
ReplyDeleteDina, did you know that there is small city called "Mashhad" in Israel?
Very well-found Dina.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Eki, it reminded me immediately the Peugeot symbol.
An interesting shadow, clearer than the sign on the bench itself !
BEautiful Dina
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful image to represent the strength of the holy land.
have a beautiful day
love and light
shalom
I have one more surprise for you Dina. First let just remind the historical ties between Persia and Israel. The more I search, the more I find.
ReplyDeleteI know very little about Hebrew language but I can recognize it when I see it somewhere. Now guess Dina what I found. It's about the alphabet!
Alef, Bet, Dalet, He, Vav, Kaf, Lamed, Mem, Nun, and Shin (in Hebrew). Now let me say some of the Persian alphabet:
Alef, Be, Dal, He, Vav, Kaf, Lam, Mim, Nun, and Shin
Well, I think Arabic alphabet also has some these letters.
One more thing ;) We also write from right to left.
