While the grandkids were visiting, I finally had an incentive to go check out the old Nature Museum in Jerusalem's German Colony.
Here are some of Israel's most common mammals, all of which I have seen in the wild.
Once I met a big porcupine in the woods in the dark of night.
Luckily it was in a hurry to dig down into its burrow.
I could hear its quills rattling as it ran.
My old friend, the jackal.
So many of them here in the hills and even in my backyard.
One evening I saw from afar a hyena down at the spring.
And there are still wild boars, too!

I don't think I would like to meet any of them in the wild and I thought we had dangerous animals.
ReplyDeleteI agree... night or DAY, I'll pass on meeting any of these out of zoos or museums. hahaha
ReplyDeleteFascinating.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind wild boar stew...
There are a few wild bores around here also........!
ReplyDeletepauvres betes,c est sur que ca doit etre interressant a voir mais ca me fait quand mm mal au coeur de les voir dans cet etat...
ReplyDeletebon dimanche et bonne semaine ;o)
I was served a wild boar once, they said it was delicacy, not good!
ReplyDeleteOnly the first can I meet in my neighborhood (in a very lucky day).
Nice to see such animals, especially since none of them live here :-)
ReplyDeleteApart from car drivers nearly no wild life over here.
ReplyDeletePlease have a good new week ahead.
You know how much I like hyenas and jackals, but the porcupine and the wild boar are fine with me...
ReplyDeletePorcupines in the Middle East? I've learned something new (again)! Somehow I always imagined they were North American animals...I've never seen a real one, they don't seem to live in Southern California.

Wow - so many different animals in Israel. There are wild pigs and porcupines here in CA, but I've never seen them, and not any jackals or hyenas.
ReplyDeleteMuseum dioramas are so interesting. I just try not to think about the stuffed part :)
We have a coyote,not Jackel.
ReplyDeletea bit like the pig art I posted today !!
ReplyDeleteThat wild boar looks like it's smiling. I sure wouldn't want to meet up with a boar in the wild. The only time I've seen a porcupine is when it was escaping up a tree.
ReplyDeletei like
ReplyDeleteI never thought of porcupines as being animals that live in Israel! You have an interesting description of the porcupine's quills "rattling." I've never seen one in person.
