A Gothic cathedral in sandstone

My visit to Australia will be ending in a few weeks. I want to share my favorite building in Sydney--St. Mary's Cathedral.
Here she is on a cloudy day, with Archibald Fountain and Hyde Park in the foreground.
And here she is in the warm sun of last Sunday.

The many stained glass windows are glorious.
There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a Gothic cathedral.
But this new addition has to be the most unusual altar I have ever seen.

  12. The altar with the crucified Christ should highlight your March 22, 08 picture of the Stone of Unction at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.....
Thanks for the interesting pic parallel!

  14. I love cathedrals, because of the work of many years and the love that is put into stone! There is an atmosphere of holiness in those high buildings. Thanks for showing!

  15. it is a lovely cathedral but call it rather gothic revival, there is nothing old enough in Australia to that could be classes as gothic.
If you ever get the chance to visit the great gothic cathedrals of Europe, I think, being as sensitive as you are, you woud be totally over awed. Places like Cologne, Chartres, Notre Dame in Paris, Amiens unfortunately was bombed in the war but has largely been restored and Rouen. There are many more as well as some wonderful ones in England like Ely.
I am getting quite sad at the thought that I won't see any of them again since my travel is restricted to car or train.
Have you been to Melbourne? St.Patrick's is well worth visiting, it has a great rose wheel window.

  16. I'd love to be able to visit this cathedral — both for the architecture and the music. That last altar is pretty creepy though.
