Planted in antiquity

A simple little cafe in a back street of Jerusalem had these unusual planters.
Don't they look like something out of the mythology of some other nation?
Any ideas?

  1. This looks like Roman art to me, in its treatment of subject matter. Why are the bodies so squat? That's not Roman. Curious wall art you captured!

  3. I love those - so much more interesting than the plain ones.

(Are you getting blasted by the windstorm we are up there? I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up in Oz the way it's blowing out there...)

  4. hello Beautiful Dina.

It does seem to be a beautiful relief.Nice art can happen in the commonest places.
I felt right off intuitively, that it was a biblical scene and when I looked closer I could see the angel's wing so maybe it is.

  8. They are definitely Roman sarcophagi; the cupid is very often the symbol of the soul in such art, and very often ecorates the sarcophagus of a child.

For fuller accounts see Koortbojian, Michael. Myth, Meaning, and Memory on Roman Sarcophagi. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1995.

  9. Perhaps they are Roman sculptures, but I'm not sure. However they are curious compositions.
