Romans have returned

.
Russian writing and a rather ridiculous rendering of a Roman.
.
Right after you enter Jaffa Gate into Jerusalem's Old City, you will see him.
Reflection of the gate is visible in the moneychanger's window.
.
All these Rs are for ABC Wednesday.

  1. This Roman doesn't look too dangerous. Enjoyed that.

  3. Hi Dina! What a coincidence! I have also a post about the Romans!
They were important for Great Britain and also for other European countries like mine. Maybe they were even our ancestors, they certainly affected our languages these Romans.

  7. Yes, a ridiculous-looking Roman. Someone must have had him left over from something else and put him to work.

  8. You're right they were destructive. The Romans were here as well and killed whoever opposed them.

  9. Funny, a bit "surprising", no?...

  10. Looks a bit like he could come out of the Asterix comics...

  11. What have the Romans ever done for us... to merit this!

  12. DawnTreader, that was my thought too. I thought he was from Asterix.
It would be interesting to know what was written in Russia.

  13. Thank you for the memories of Asterix & Obelix, years since last seen/read.

    Please have a good Wednesday.

(Found the Synagoge of Athens today. Will send you the picture tomorrow.)

  15. Why Russian writing? Very strange.

  16. Actually, a harmless Roman is a nice Roman to have around.

  17. What a very funny Roman! As others have said it seems to have been taken from one of the Asterix books. :-)

  18. Dina's comments on your comments:

If there is anyone who has never seen the very funny and true Monty Python "What have the Romans ever done for us," Reader Wil was good enough to post it for us:

Yes, it's a shame he looks so pathetic, but he IS attention-getting there at Jaffa Gate.

Having grown up in the USA, I am not so familiar with Asterix.

The sign in Russian advertises guided tours in Jerusalem, Israel, Petra, etc.

Why in Russian? Well, the Russian "tourist industry" is growing rapidly. There are now more Russian tourists visiting Israel than American tourists.
And Israel is home to maybe about a million Russian-speaking immigrants. Russian is a lot quicker for them to read than Hebrew.
