Hills are alive with the sound of jackals

One jackal starts sounding off and soon all the families in the woods and up and down the valley join in the chorus. It is really something to hear! The first video is at my friends' place on the side of our mountain, in the woods.

The second sound clip features the young jackal pups learning how to yap and howl. They were right outside my window. It took several nights to capture the sound because every time I turned on the camera they would hear it and become silent. Finally I got smart and turned off the lights and opened the lens under a pillow. They are smart critters and the cubs are so funny!

My favorite picture of a jackal neighbor (in snow!) can be found here.

Lots more animal stories and pictures at the weekend Camera-Critters blog.

The coyotes in our mountains have a very similar cry... it's almost haunting to listen to. Thank you for taking the time to capture and share the sounds of the jackals. Fascinating post!

Amazing sounds to live with. I suppose jackals have always been in the area. It deepens the picture I have of Jerusalem even more now.
What a beautiful impression sound leaves us with.

My cat, The Puddha got a bit agitated with me playing this.

I recorded outside, you'd probably hear drizzle and a 747 going over every 40 minutes, Boeing's Paine field is up the hill.

Hello beautiful Dina.

The hills of Jerusalem have truly come alive to us through this beautiful post and video.
Thankyou for bringing us the raucous sweet sound of the jackal pups.

You know Dina, I have never really considered this- before coming to your golden journal from the holy land but even though I am not jewish, Israel is one of my homelands.Israel is like a homeland to all christians and catholics.

Have a beautiful Sunday.

We have LOTS of coyotes here, and I must admit they tend to freak me out when I hear them in a nearby field.

Holy crap! I had no idea jackals sounded like that. What an unearthly cry.

Now I want to hear jackals and peacocks doing their thing together.
