Circles in the sky

The sky over Jerusalem last week.

Looking east from the Tower of David, we see the Old City with the tower of the (Lutheran) Church of the Redeemer and the gold Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, and on the horizon Mount Scopus and the Mount of Olives. If you enlarge the photo you can make out the arches of the Mormon university just right of the top of the white bell tower.

Same circles in the sky, but here we can see the gray rotundas of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Redeemer Church bell tower. Hebrew University Mount Scopus campus is on the horizon.
.
Happy sky watching with other bloggers' new photos at SkyWatch Friday, starting tonight.

  4. Great that you managed to catch those circles.

  5. Interesting sky shots. I am guessing the circles are from an airplane. I visited Jerusalem in 1977 for a professional conference and enjoyed the beauty of the country.

  10. are the rings clouds or the remains of vapour trails from planes?

  11. Those circular clouds look marvellous, Dina! Did those clouds naturally occur? Were they the trace of an airplane?

  12. Shalom everyone. I DON'T KNOW! The circles are a mystery to me! I was in a group tour in the Museum of Jerusalem History when we came out onto the tower for a panorama view. So what was in the sky before that, I don't know.
We don't have sky-writers. RuneE asks if there had been helicopters flying in circles. This is logical. Could well be. But do helicopters leave such trails? I've never seen this before.

Many are the mysteries in the Holy City. Sometimes it is just better to let a mystery be a mystery. :)

  13. Eki, there were a few other very light, wispy clouds in a blue sky that warm day. But none in this round shape.

  14. I love coming to see you, I'm always assured to go back in Paris with new informations, even for Sky Watch.
I think that many of us will wonder for a long time what kind of flying machines could make such circles.

  43. So good to be back and thanks for your comments. The last month has been very sad. We had to rush home to be with my sister-in-law who very bravely lost her battle with melanoma not long after we got there.

The Mumbai horror has left me numb too and that dear couple on your post yesterday who we now know lost their lives is just too terrible to contemplate. Surely they don't think this is what their God would have wanted???

  44. It is peace in Mumbai at last.
Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes.
Pray for all those who lost their lives and may God give strength to their near and dear ones to bear their irreparable loss.
