Yahrzeit of John F. Kennedy

President John F. Kennedy was killed on this day, 45 years ago. Thanks to blogger Webradio in France for posting JFK's photo today and reminding me.
Our Yad Kennedy was built in 1966 with funds donated by Jewish communities in the United States. It is 60 feet /18 meters high and has the shape of a tree stump, symbolizing a life cut short. The mountaintop memorial is made up of 51 columns, each bearing the emblem of a state of the Union, plus the District of Columbia.
At 830 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest places around Jerusalem. The panoramic view in all directions is breathtaking. It is very quiet.
Also breath-taking, literally, is the climb up the mountain. What you see in the center of the photo is my village, my starting point for the hike.

I always seem to reach the Kennedy Memorial after it has closed. But I think that inside is a bust of the President and an eternal flame.
When the shocking news of his assassination came, I was just a freshman in university in Chicago. He had been a big inspiration to us college kids. May his memory be a blessing.

  3. I remember so clearly sitting on my school bus and the driver crying. I went home to find my mother and grandmother in tears. I was only 6 at the time...it was such a loss.

  6. I like how the white stripes spread out from the trunk. Also reminds me of a picket fence.

  7. That is a beautiful memorial for President Kennedy. It's interesting how Americans all know what they were doing when they heard he had been shot. I was in a high school math class in Hawaii.

  9. Way back then when Kennedy was president I was a Republican.

I switched parties then and voted for John F. Kennedy for president. My wife did too.

I don't think Lydon Johnson ever liked Kennedy and we, my wife and I, always thought he had something to do with the Kennedy assassination. Speculation? Yes it is but why that thought stuck with me all these years is a bigger mystery.

I didn't like Johnson period and almost as much as I don't like George W. Bush. Texas has produced two that I didn't like.

Anyway, JfK was my favorite president and he was assassinated. Now, Barack Obama is my favorite president or president elect.

  11. Oh I remember that day, is it already 45 years ago?
Beautiful building and the landscape is great but I bet there are nasty creatures there, things like snakes and scorpions.

  12. Very impressive. So much I didn't see while I was there. I lost my on Father less than a year after we all lost JFK.

I'm trying to catch up on blog reading today. Have a great rest of the weekend.

  13. The Yad Kennedy is astounding! I was a child but I remember being sent home from school. My mother was crying while watching television. The entire family just sat around the television in grave anticipation, and then the news of his death. I remember the
intense grief in my home. To this day, we'll never know why!
