Once in a proverbial blue moon

.
Here in Israel we saw a partial lunar eclipse tonight!

Once in a blue moon, as the saying goes, there are two full moons in the same calendar month. That happens every two and a half years.
A blue moon on New Year's Eve is much rarer. It last happened in 1990.
But even more rare is the partial lunar eclipse that accompanies a blue moon, like tonight.

The moon was disappearing behind fast-blowing clouds. You had to be fast to snap a few shots.
.
It was a beautiful scene, a wondrous way to welcome a new civil year.
.
Happy new year to all the friends at SkyWatch and all the friends around the world.

You know it isn't a Blue Moon here as it was already January. We'll have ours at the end of the month. Although it certainly is a very bright moon!!
Best wishes fro 2010 . Julie

  8. How cool is that!!! Now that's what I call a rare happening. Does it foretell something for the new year?

  9. You captured that lunar shot nicely, Dina. That is hard to do. A fabulous way to start skywatch Friday! Happy New Year, at least the new year on the Gregorian, secular calendar! Let's hope for a more peaceful 2010! Keep digging, literally and metaphorically and sharing your treasures with the world. You are a tremendous asset to the City Daily Photo community.

  15. Yesterday I failed to see (and to photograph) a blue moon, the rain was awful here this New Year's Eve.

  17. When I see the moon I think of the sun shining there in the completely black sky. And on the moon we weigh less! ;-)

  18. I like the second photo with the clouds. Great shot. I had hoped to take some here as well, but the sky was overcast as it is much of the winter here in upstate New York.

    Happy New Year to you.
