Horsefeathers!

.
Two police horses were a bit spooked for a second here, near the Citadel.
The horses do well in disturbances on the ground, but I think here they were distracted by the unusual movement above them.
City workers on moving cranes and tall ladders were putting up big decorations for the upcoming Light Festival.

Hey, Camera-Critter folks, what's with the long hair on these horses' fetlocks and lower legs?
I thought only draft horses have such "feather." No?
Please click on the photo to get a closer view.

The horses peacefully passed the old gate of the Tower of David and just beyond, walked through the gate of the old Kishle police station.
Just about everything is old in the wonderful Old City.

UPDATE Jan. 4, 2014:  Willow solves the mystery and tells us these are Friesian horses!  See her comment below.  Thanks Willow.

  2. I suspect horses are like us, we don't like the unexpected. I wouldn't like a sudden crane above my head either :-)

PS Thank you for the nice comment, and I see you know you Latin :-)

  5. I know nothing about horse feathers, but I did notice immediately what beautiful long manes and tails these horses have. I love that they are not clipped. Their "feathers" around their hooves look very graceful too...

  7. I love seeing the police horses patrolling our city too, even though it's not as old or historic as Jerusalem.

  12. What beautiful horses the policemen ride !
They are Friesian horses noted for having lovely feather on their legs . The breed is native to the Netherlands (or is noted for having been first bred there) They are a wonderful breed , very expensive to buy here in the United States. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you also for visiting my blog !
