Sweet jackal pup!

.
Look what a sweet jackal pup!!
.
I was coming up from the woods at 7:45 pm, looked down to the olive grove, and was lucky to see the youngster, out all alone. He stood, very alert, just long enough for me to zoom in and turn off the flash and get two shots. Then he dashed off into the thicket to tell Mama and Papa Jackal about the two-legged animal he had seen.
.
You can read how baby jackals are raised in this article.
It says there that "Family or pack members communicate with each other by a screaming yell and yapping, or a siren-like howl when a kill is located."
I recorded two little sound clips of these voices that you can hear here.
Click on my label "jackal" for more pictures of these wonderful animals.

  5. I'm a little concerned that the kittys in your wee video production aren't a little more concerned over screaming jackals. So much like coyotes

  13. Glad you all enjoyed the young jackal. I've lived in this wooded area three years but this is only the second time that I've seen a pup. You see lots of grown-up jackals in my yard, in the woods, even in the street (when it's dark). We hear their chorus every night and evening. You can distinguish the voices of the little ones just learning how to yap.

  14. PasadenaAdjacent, yes, but the cats are used to it. I heard and partially saw an attempted attack on the black cat. The cat was in the tree at top speed.
But indeed, when the kitten was little, jackals ate half of her litter. The mother, a first-timer, did stand up to the jackals when they came back for more and she won.

  17. I hope the two-legged animal managed to escape too (or are the jackals not dangerous?)

  18. Rune, no worries. The jackals run away from humans (so far ...).

  19. That is an interesting sound. It does sound more like a cat than I would have thought. We never see animals like that here, but mostly raccoons and possums
