A spinning marathon underway

.
Just inside the Jaffa Gate today I saw over a dozen exercise bikes sitting on the sidewalk.
One or two guys were trying to wheel them out through the gate, a hard task over the uneven old paving stones (and since those stationary bikes have only tiny wheels).

Later, when I left the Old City and walked near the city wall, I found the bikes--all one thousand of them!

I guessed it might be connected with Jerusalem's Light Festival which is being set up now; like riders could pedal and produce some electricity to power the lights.

But tonight's TV news showed over 800 people pedaling away fast as they could, and to music, in the cool darkness of evening!
They called it a spinning marathon.
Something about a World Sports Week.

Jerusalem's ancient Old City walls have seen many things over the centuries--but nothing like this.

  4. HA! This made me smile.

I spin 4X a week, but inside a building and not in Israel.

  6. It sounds both odd and fun! I only found out what a "spinning studio" was a couple of years ago.

I apologize for disappearing yet again. My husband and went on a long road trip (I didn't have time to create scheduled posts) and when we got home a week ago, we discovered that we didn't have our land line or internet connection. Despite following up everyday (sometimes twice a day) no service crew has yet come to our house. I'm in an internet cafe in a mall right now because I'm beginning to get really bad withdrawal symptoms.

  7. That must be a great happening! During WWII there was no electricity and then a bicycle was used to produce some light. Of course the cycling was done in turns.

  8. I imagine that the energy needed to make, transport, unload and eventually dispose of these devices is far more than the tiny amount they will ever produce...

  9. Did they really pedal these bikes to produce light, Dina?

    That's a wonderful idea for a festival.

  10. Eki, the Light Festival only starts on June 6 (to the 14th) so we will not know until then.
