A white donkey waiting on the Mt. of Olives

.
A white donkey!!
A friend and I were on the Mount of Olives for Ascension Day and we just happened to happen upon a white donkey!

Jewish tradition says that when the messiah comes, he will enter the Old City through the Gate of Mercy (the Golden Gate), mounted on a WHITE DONKEY.
(See some surprising things about that in Wikipedia.)

But getting back to the donkey in the photo . . . he was standing within the big and beautiful olive-tree planted area of Viri Galilei that overlooks new and old Jerusalem.
You can see the Greek Orthodox church in back of the donkey.

The name of the church is taken from Acts1:11 which quotes the two angels who said to the apostles "Men of Galilee [viri galilei in Latin], why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

  1. When I was in elementary school (way back when), my girlfriend had a donkey on her parents ranch in the foothills. I'm not sure why they bought him, he couldn't be ridden or used in any way. He was just too cantankerous. - Margy

  2. Margy, I believe that. If you want a useful donkey, only a female jenny will do. Jacks are nice to look at and necessary for making baby donkeys, but that's about it, IMHO.

  4. I love it! The Bible comes alive in your photos.

We often hear someone's donkey braying in the distance for no particular reason. He goes on and on. Some friends of ours live next to the people who own the donkey and the braying is wearing thin on them!

  5. Yes, that was interesting information at the wikipedia link...most of it new to me!

I'll never think of the Messiah's donkey now without remembering the modern twist given to the meaning!

  8. Little does that donkey realise that he may be The One! Even before I saw your photo, I had heard that 2012 might be an important messianic year.

  10. Such a cutie. I love donkeys. There used to be some just outside my grand mother's garden when I was little. And I had a small stuffed one too.
