Like day and night

.
The full moon rose at 8 o'clock last Sunday over our neighbor mountain in the Jerusalem Hills.

Just five hours before that same moonrise, that same mountain was enveloped in smoke.
Here you can see the ancient terraces, black and all their vegetation burned.
.
Miraculously the forest fire was stopped just outside our village gate (on the right side of this photo).
And the two villages on top of the higher hill were also spared at the last minute.
By early evening it was all over, after 250 acres of woodland had gone up in smoke.
.
For SkyWatch Friday. May we, and you, know no more smokey skies, amen!
.
(For more about the fire, please see my post from yesterday and from Sunday.)

  2. Pietro, you asked about the cause.
A class of teenage yeshiva boys were down in our valley, at the spring. A few boys "played with fire," and when it suddenly got out of control they all panicked and ran away. As I understand it, they did not bother to inform the Fire Department.
The boys were found, arrested, questioned, and are out on bail.
Their teacher, who was with them on the field trip, was also questioned.

  8. Sorry to hear about the fire. That smoke may look good on a photo but I wish it was just mist.

  9. The firefighters must protect the people, sometimes at the expense of the trees.

I'm so grateful you and your village are safe.

  10. So glad to hear they got that fire when they did. So you captured the full moon! Great shot! This situation is every parent's worst nightmare. It is so easy for fun/curiosity/pranks to get out of control. In Greensboro a few years ago, an angry girlfriend set fire to a couch outside her boyfriend's apartment. In the end a few people were killed, including the boyfriend, a female friend, and her sister. The girl who set the fire is in jail for life. Terrible situation. Life is such a delicate balance of good and bad!

  11. Dina, thanks a lot for the information. In effect, the spontaneous combustion is quite rare.

  15. How horrible are those fires. It takes a long time to extinquish those fires. I hope that everything soon will be over.

  16. Oh, Dina, that IS sad... the loss of all those trees... and I sure hope those boys learned an important lesson. You still managed a pretty moon shot.

  18. Was this forest fire deliberately lit? When I watch the Australian fires, i feel so sad.

  20. What a terrible shame, Dina. It's so sad to hear that people are so careless.
