Look Ma, no hands!

.
The newsmen were focusing on Jerusalem Mayor Barkat at the recent rededication of the Old City's Flower Gate (aka Herod's Gate).

But I found it more interesting to watch the photographers instead.

This was new to me.
A kind of video camera stabilizer, I suppose?
Can some of you tell me what it is called or more about it?

  1. Wow! He must have steady shoulders. It's got to be tiring to have that heavy camera on his shoulder for any length of time.

  2. J says it looks like a variation on something called a Fig Rig. This one might be custom built.

  3. I looked at images in Yahoo search and found one like it but had to scroll through a lot of pages. It is a Fig Rig.

  6. OK! Thanks for y'all's help.
My photographer son said the round thing was a spinoff from the Steadicam, and J and Abe bring us the name Fig Rig.
    I'm learning.

In Petrea's link they say, "A circular frame with a crossbar to mount most mini DV cameras, the Fig Rig becomes part of the body to produce smooth, steady traveling shots.. As the operator walks, his/her muscles and tendons absorb all the shocks, transferring only fluid movements to the camera."

And as VP says, who knows if it really helps.

  7. Kay, I'd much prefer a little Fig Rig than that big thing on my shoulder.

Trotter, I'm glad I'm not the only one who never saw this contraption.

  8. For me it's too bulky and heavy just a simple reflex camera!
