Red magen David

.
I knew the pomegranate has special symbolic value for the Jewish new year Rosh Hashana.
I knew the fruit tastes good and is good for you.

But I never realized until looking at this photo that the pomegranate wears a star of David!
.
Sukkot starts tonight. Chag sameach, happy holiday!

  1. I am not really a fan of pomegranates and have not had one in many years. Not noticed the star before either.
    Happy holiday! Paul

  4. Oh my goodness! I didn't know that. We used to eat those all the time when we were kids. The fruits used to hang out of people's yards and ....ummmm... the kids would just pluck them to eat on the way home from school. We also ate star fruits, mango and guava. We took them all for granted.

Thanks for the memories, Dina. I'll be looking at the pomegranates more carefully now. Shalom!

  9. In the early 1950s we sometimes had a pomegranate when I visited Aunt Alice in Montreal. Very tart fruit.

In 1954 we moved to Fort Lauderdale, and I took a photo of a nice home with a pomegranate tree. There was a sign under, saying, "Yes, it is a pomegranate tree."

In 1978 I moved to Tucson, where I promply planted two pomegranate trees. Prompted by you, I just walked out and picked one. For the first time in decades I noticed the star.

    Learn something new every day.
