Cookie cutter food

.
Blogger friends Rob and Mandy over at the always-entertaining Barcelona Daily Photo are inviting us all to contribute to their new meme. "Food for Thoughts" will be about food, eating-places, and anything food-related.
Yalla!
.
Making Christmas cookies--yes, right here in Jerusalem!
I sighted the girls decorating them in the little restaurant of Christ Church guesthouse.
(It is just to the right of the Jaffa Gate as you enter the Old City. )
.
Christmas cookies are pretty symbolic Food for Thought, no?

Which is taller, the cut tree or the potted plant?
.
A little more about Christ Church, the oldest Protestant church in the Middle East, here.

    The cookie monster.

BTW, some people really eat urchins, supposedly a delicacy. Never tried it.

  2. Hey! GREEN Christmas cookies? What happens when you eat too many? You doubly go green?!!

    BTW, I love urchins.

  3. This is funny, but green cookies?
As a kid I used to catch a lot of urchins off the rocky shore near Antignano. Mom and our friends were happy to eat them on the spot, just with some lemon.
My father, my brother and I never ate them.

  4. Hey friends, is green sugar and red sugar solely an American thing? I remember from childhood in Chicago how people decorated SUGAR cookies with colored sugars at Christmas time.

Sea urchins--what is there to eat on them? Don't they have just a tiny body? How do you get to it?
You know, creepy crawly things from the sea (the fruits de mer) are traif, not kosher.

  5. I also wanted to ask about the green cookies. Made with green sugar? Where did you find that? I used to use green food color when making pistasio ice cream, but I desided to leave out these ugly chemicals.

  6. Mmm, cookies. What with the cold I feel more inclined towards sugar intake that I normally would.

  7. I see your point, Dina, about the colored food. I haven't baked in a long time and haven't read the labels, but chemicals are going out of style here. It could be that there are organic ways to make food coloring by now, but I wouldn't know.

  8. Ah, Christmas cookies! I like eating them more than making them but it does make for great "family time."

  9. Well that is a good idea to start a new meme about food!

  10. I have not baked a single cookie this season. I really want to. I had so many plans but with Tif and family here, I can't seem to get anything done.

  11. Looking at the little bowls in the background, it appears they've made an icing glaze for the trees. Here is recipe for icing glaze for sugar cookies from allrecipes.com. Make the glaze then add food coloring in whatever color you want:

    1 cup confectioners' sugar
    2 teaspoons milk
    2 teaspoons light corn syrup
    1/4 teaspoon almond extract
    assorted food coloring

  12. Shalom friends, thanks for all your ideas about cookies, sugar, and sea urchins.

Speedway, shalom. Maybe you are right, and I stand corrected. So it is icing and not colored sugar, OK. Thanks for the glaze recipe. I think it is the first recipe to appear on this blog. :)
