International Women's Day

.
For International Women's Day I post two posters that were part of an exhibition at Ben-Gurion Airport a few months ago.

Please click on both photos to read the messages about women.

Golda Meir immigrated to Palestine in 1921, from Milwaukee, and soon began taking leadership roles. She was Israel's Foreign Minister from 1956 to 1966 and Prime Minister from 1969 to 1974.
The photo shows her dancing with women in Africa, way back when young Israel and the new countries of Africa were becoming good friends.
.
The exhibit at the airport was about MASHAV, the Israel Foreign Ministry's Center for International Cooperation, which was established in 1958, following Golda's first visit to Africa.
.
I am just now learning about a really great project that MASHAV is planning. Please drop by tomorrow and I'll try to tell more about it.
.
Shalom to the women of the world on International Women's Day !

  1. Years ago I read that before 1967, Israel gave more aid to Africa per capita than any nation. Israel sent people to teach agriculture to the poor nations in Africa, but after the 1967 War, the Arab countries "bought off" the leaders and turned them against Israel. Is this still the case today, or has there been a renewed effort by Israel to develop contacts with the sub-sahara nations?

  4. Sailor Girl, thanks to you, too, for being a good blog-friend across the watery miles.

Leif, funny how you had the perfect post for the day before you even knew it.

Moneythoughts, yes, true, but I think you mean after the 1973 Yom Kippur War (not the 1967 Six Day War).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says this:

"The renewal and initiation of new diplomatic relations between Israel and Africa began in the mid-1980's. The first countries to renew relations were considered daring and brave, having done so in violation of the OAU's resolution and challenging the authority of the Arab states who in turn threatened to cut off their aid.
Today, Israel maintains full diplomatic relations with 39 of 47 of the countries south of the Sahara and has nine resident embassies on the continent.

The restoration of diplomatic relations was accompanied by the renewal of government cooperation, albeit on a much smaller scale than had previously existed, focusing primarily on MASHAV training programs and humanitarian aid. Today, most of the Israeli activity on the African continent is of private corporations, primarily in the fields of development, diamonds, Africa's abundant raw materials and natural resources, infrastructure, telecommunications, and large agricultural projects."

  5. Studies have been made that show that countries where the women are educated and empowered are more economically developed than countries whose women are not.

In the continuing assistance of the UN to Haiti, the WFP distributes food to the women rather than the men because they are better assured that it will reach those who need to be fed.

Just a little something to think about on this day.

Peace and love indeed to all the women of the world.

    Thank you, Dina.

  9. Golda Meir was a giant - and still is, in «Louis'» opinion.

  10. Hilda, this is very interesting (but not surprising). Thanks.

Jorgen, Women's Day and the Men's Home--is there some connection? LOL
Thanks for the hundred years information; I didn't know that.

Catherine, Jew Wishes, Louis, yes, we women have some strong examples to look up to.
