Looking out for jaywalking camels

.

If you are driving down the highways of the Negev desert  you had better be looking out for camels.
One of them might wander onto the road.
Every year Israel has at least one fatal accident in which a car collides with a camel, and by fatal I mean for the driver and/or his passengers, not just the camel.

Give heed to the frequent roadside signs:

BEWARE OF CAMELS
NEAR THE ROAD
.

UPDATE Dec. 18:  See http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4466950,00.html
Fourteen camels were killed by a train between Beer Sheva and Dimona.

  1. We do not really see anything like this...

  2. I thought camels always go with caravans, I did not know that they also run around freely...

  3. That is funny, but I could see it happening there. Neat sign, thanks for sharing. Have a happy week!

  4. It think it's safe to say that is not a sign you will see anywhere in the USA. I did visit a camel farm a few months ago in Southern California, but their camels are all kept in well fenced pastures.

  5. We have similar signs for moose here. They're so big that a collision's often fatal for the driver.

  6. Ha ha - what a great sign.

  7. I've heard similar stories about moose in Canada. You'd think a camel would be hard to miss since it's rather tall and large.

  8. Not something I have to worry about here.

  9. Love the sign! We do have camels wandering around the outback (Australia) here, but not enough to warrant that sign.
However when you see signs about Beware of Kangaroos or Wombats or evan Emus in some places, you need to take them seriously. They aren't fatal to hit - but boy, what damage they can do to a car.

  11. Great Post Dina! Camels, like moose are not mindful of the cars. What a driver sees is deceptive...you are focused ahead..all you see is legs or they step out. The body falls on and crushes the car. be careful!Have a great week! mary

  14. That is one huge sign! I'm guessing the camel in a triangle was not quite enough of a warning for some drivers.

  15. First time I've seen that sign. Nice photo!

  16. I've seen warning for Kangaroos but none for Camels. ;)

  17. Lesley, on parts of the roads closer to human settlement there are only the small signs with a camel inside a triangle. But out in the wide open desert you find these huge signs and very frequently.

Marleen, it was my first time too, and I was excited. I just moved to the Negev (from Jerusalem) in August.
The photo could have been nicer but the bus was going about 100 km/hour.

  18. We have signs to watch for deer on the road, and an occasional cow, but not watch camels. Neat sign. Would not want to run into a camel. They are large and tall.

  19. whoa, after a bit of surprise at the wording, then, oh yeah, it IS the desert after all!
thanks for sharing; I love learning about your part of our world.

  21. So strange to se a sign about wild camels.. :D I hope the drivers do slow down, and take this seriously. We have the same problem with moose and deers some places here in norway, but I didn`t know there was wild camels on the road.
    Thank you for sharing :)
