SNOW at last!

.
(All photos can be enlarged with a click and then another click.)

"Shalom and welcome! I'm the banana-mouthed snowman of Dina's village in the Jerusalem Hills!"

YES,  SNOW!!
For the first time in five years, our moshav woke up to a white winter wonderland.

Here's the other side of my street.

This is the first and only time I saw chains on a car wheel in Israel.
Wait a minute--are those paperclips??

In the foreground is my yard; on the far horizon to the right, Jerusalem sits in a cloud of its own snow.

By late morning the temperature was rising to above freezing and wet snow started sliding off trees onto my neck.   brrr!

The sun came out for a few minutes and I saw some blue sky for the first time this week.

Oops.  Who's got a chainsaw to open the path?

The red geranium didn't know what hit it.

Nor did the ktalav, the Eastern Strawberry tree.

The olive trees were straining under the weight of wet snow.

The green grass of winter looked so bright in the sunlight.

After 2.5 hours of picture-taking I came home and the precipitation was already becoming  more like rain.
But Jerusalem was again visible across the valley.
.
It was impossible for me to get into the city because the buses stopped running.
But you can see Jerusalem snow pictures in the newspapers:
The Times of Israel
Jerusalem Post
And about the weather damage all over the country:  Ynet

  1. It is an amazing sight and I am sure to the delight of children and yes, adults too. Very hard to get used to cold weather though.

  7. This is so wonderful and amazing. You must have felt like you were back in Chicago. With the crazy weather Hawaii has been getting, mini tornadoes and hail; who knows? Maybe we'll get snow too. And I mean some place other than Mauna Kea.

  9. I saw snow in Jerusalem exactly 5 years ago, and it was like moving around in another world. Truly magical.

  11. Ciel, zut alors, I was so busy taking pictures I forgot to make a snowman! Plus, it is not so much fun doing it alone.
The kids around here do not know the method of rolling a snowball around and around until it grows into 1/3 of a snowman.

  12. What joy.

Did snow over here as well a few days ago, yet did not remain on the ground.

Please have a good Friday ahead.

  13. Great photos! Everything there looks so different. It never really snows here - you have to go into the mountains to see it - we just get frost.

  14. That's beautiful. Its been years since I've seen snow (not in Australia). It was 42 degrees C here the other day and I think going up to 36 or 37 tomorrow.

  16. A very good reportage of your places under the snow. I hope this weather do not cause further damages.

  17. It's beautiful Dina but I do hope the snow doesn't damage the olive crop and the oranges. Menton is full of oranges on the trees at the moment so presumably you have them too. Israeli orange juice being so famous. Years ago the whole California crop was damaged I seem to recall so fingers crossed.

  19. The poor flowers and olive tree. Glad to see the palm trees took it well, though. Your friend's photos of a snow-covered city are lovely too. Quite amazing.
