The bounty of the earth

.

This afternoon we took advantage of the sunny day (the first I have seen in my 9 days in Austria) and worked outside.
Nice how the beets are color coordinated with the wheelbarrow, no?

We prepared the freshly harvested root vegetables for storage in the cellar.
There was parsley and some other herbs too.

Here I'm showing off a 3-fingered carrot.
The food here at the Franziskusgemeinschaft  is great.
The community of 18 members is self-sufficient in meat, dairy, vegetables, and fruit and nuts.

  1. What a bounty, love the wheelbarrow's colour!
My mother would cover root vegetables with sand in wooden boxes, kept all winter in the root cellar.

  2. The countryside looks so peaceful.
If you do not know it yet, Birdman from PortCity Daily Photo died from heart attack.

  4. This is the first time I've seen "beet purples" instead of "beet greens."

  6. It does look so peaceful there. I've only been to Austria once on a quickie tour of Europe, just to Innsbruck, but the alps were very pretty.

  7. The wheelbarrows are wonderfully colorful and yes, those beets do coordinate perfectly. A vision of lavender. You look nicely bundled up against the cold. Send some of that cold air over our way, will you? It is so interesting to see food hanging from the eaves.

  8. Merisi, you too?? I was amazed to see that old method of burying the root vegetables in sand in the floor of the cellar!

Mia more and Petrea, we will all miss dear Birdman so much. He left us all so suddenly. So sad.

Crystal, it seems that Austria is worth a long tour. I haven't seen much yet. Maybe I'll stay in Vienna a few days at the end of my month at the farm.

Friends, thanks for all your fun comments.
